Harlem station opened on October 28, 1962. It is the northwesternmost terminus of the Green Line. The station is adjacent to the Oak Park Metra commuter railroad station. It is located over the Oak Park and Forest Park boundary line at Harlem Avenue.

The Harlem station was built with an auxiliary entrance at Circle Avenue that was eventually converted to an exit only facility. The Circle Avenue entrance repoened as an auxiliary entrance/exit on September 26, 2009, at 4 PM.
