Unless the lines are too long, go through a regular check stand instead of self checkout. The checkers are much nicer. I've asked 3 different self check out clerks for a Safeway card and they refused.

Pub sandwich at the deli = basically awesome. They're not cheap, but if you make sure you use your Safeway card you get one free for every 7 or 8 you get.
