The synagogue was built on the same location as the Semper Synagogue, which was destroyed during the Kristallnacht. Its boundary wall incorporates the last remaining fragments of the former synagogue.

The New Synagogue was shortlisted by the jury for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture in 2003.
