Washington: la modesta capital de un gran país
La capital de los Estados Unidos de América, Washington, es una ciudad relativamente joven y planificada.
Durante su gobierno, el presidente George Washington inició aquí una etapa nueva de construcción a gran escala, que se convertiría en el símbolo de la nueva capital estadounidense. Actualmente, todas las autoridades del país y las organizaciones financieras de importancia global se concentran en Washington. Aquí se encuentran los Representantes de todas las ramas del gobierno federal, decenas de embajadas diplomáticas, la sede principal del Banco Mundial y el FMI.En el mapa de la capital, están marcadas 6 estructuras arquitectónicas de las 10 más destacadas de los Estados Unidos. Entre ellos se encuentran la catedral, la Casa Blanca (residencia presidencial), el Capitolio, los monumentos conmemorativos de Jefferson, Lincoln y de los veteranos de la guerra de Vietnam. La construcción más alta de la ciudad, el monumento a Washington, es otra atracción turística famosa. Un lugar popular para los amantes de las compras es el centro comercial Ronald Reagan con un área de casi 300,000 metros cuadrados.La guía turística de la ciudad señala como centro cultural y científico de la capital a la Explanada Nacional (National Mall) frente a la cual, se encuentran los museos de historia americana y natural, los museos de la aviación, astronáutica y el museo del Instituto Smithsoniano.Las líneas del metro y las rutas de autobuses forman la red de transporte público de Washington y lo conectan con los alrededores. En los días laborables, los residentes de los arrabales viajan a a la ciudad para trabajar, lo que aumenta la población casi dos veces. Por esta razón, el metro de Washington ocupa el segundo lugar en términos de cantidad de pasajeros, después del metro de Nueva York. La capital fue la primera ciudad es en los Estados Unidos que implementó el sistema de uso público de bicicletas. Ahora cualquier persona puede alquilar vehículos de dos ruedas en alguno de los muchos lugares de la ciudad.
