San Francisco: ciudad de las nieblas
En la costa del Pacífico, cerca del estrecho de Golden Gate (Puerta Dorada en español), se encuentra una de las ciudades más emblemáticas de los Estados Unidos: San Francisco.
Fue fundada por los españoles a finales del siglo XVIII como un fuerte militar, que originalmente se llamó Yerba-Buena. La ciudad fue nombrada San Francisco después de la fiebre del oro de California, que sirvió de fuerza motriz para su desarrollo y rápido crecimiento.Durante todo el tiempo de su existencia, ubicada en una zona sísmica activa, la ciudad de San Francisco ha sobrevivido a varios terremotos destructivos. Sin embargo, en cada ocasión se reconstruía y renacía nuevamente. Ahora la ciudad de San Francisco es un importante centro económico, cultural y turístico, la decimosegunda ciudad más poblada representada en el mapa de los Estados Unidos.Las mundialmente famosas atracciones arquitectónicas, parques, sitios culturales y sociales, y eventos atraen a un gran número de turistas extranjeros. En San Francisco, existen muchos lugares para visitar: El puente «Golden Gate» y Chinatown, la isla de Alcatraz, conocida por la película sobre la prisión, la torre de observación Koit, con la que se abre una vista inolvidable y el sistema de tranvías de cable. La ciudad tiene un sistema de transporte público bien desarrollado. Este incluye rutas de autobuses, trolebuses y tranvías de alta velocidad, de superficie y subterráneos. Los famosos tranvías históricos de cable no solo sirven para el transporte, sino que representan también de manera independiente, un objeto turístico de la ciudad.
